Introduce yourself the Web-god did say…
No pressure, I can do this. I mean, how hard could writing about self be?
Hi! My name is Molly and I love zombie movies and the colour orange. I also love art and am quite crafty. What are my credentials for calling myself an artist? 4 years at Unitec in Auckland gained me a Diploma in 3 Dimensional Design, majoring in Fabric and Fibre. (Does that make me an artist?) I was involved in the Wearable Art scene in New Zealand for a number of years. I did alright, made it into the odd book and took out a few prizes in shows. (Does this define me as an artist?). It all came to a head though after paying, yet again, to enter and compete in a Wearable Art show. I did well. I won my section. I won a casserole dish. Now, there’s no point in owning a casserole dish if you cant actually afford to put food in a casserole dish right? (Definitely felt like an artist). This moment of time was resolved by putting all my worldly possessions, my Wearable Art and my lovely casserole dish into storage. Australia I did go….
Destination Great Barrier Reef. A part of the world that will forever hold a special place in my heart. It is impossible not to be blown away by the beauty of the reef and all its inhabitants. (Not an artist, way too busy SCUBA diving).
As does happen, life evolved and I became a trade certified Chef which meant I was actually able to stay out on the ocean and earn a good wage as a deckhand and cook for a shipping company. I got to see so much of Australia from a perspective very few have the privilege of seeing. When on land my husband & I would pack up the ute and dogs and go travelling for weeks on end camping in remote areas all across Queensland and into the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Life was busy, life was great. No time for Art.
Just like that almost 2 decades have passed and I find myself back in New Zealand, living in the Bay of Islands surrounded by bush and sea.
I can actually afford to fill that casserole dish now. But I’m not going to. I’m way too busy making ART.
I’m making ART that doesn’t need to go into competitions. I’m making ART that doesn’t fit someone else’s agenda. I’m making ART that does not need judging. I’m making ART that makes my heart sing.
Who knows, I might even be an Artist.
